History of
Otto Smik AFB Sliac The modern history of the AFB began with a redisposition combat and maintenance units from Czech basis: Brno, Namest and Prerov. People and facilities from these air bases were essential for creating the 81st Independent Fighter Squadron and the 81st Maintenance Battalion of aerodrome and radio communication service.
![]() An origin of these units hadbeen proclaimed by the "Order of MoD of the Czech-Slovak Federal Republic" on the 7th of May 1991 and immediately aftermath was the redisposition of aircraft and equipment of the 81st Independent Fighter Squadron done, leading by her commander Lt. Col. Ing. Jozef Krakovsky. The commander of the 81st Maintenance Battalion was appointed Lt. Col. Ing. Kornel Vital. By the festive occasion of "The Day of the origin of the independent Czech and Slovak Republic", the courtesy title " Squadron of the Slovak National Uprising" was conferrable to the 81st Independent Fighter Squadron by the president of the Czech-Slovak Federal Republic Order on the 28th of October 1991. ![]() The 1st AFB Sliac (Commander Lt. Col. Ing. Jozef Krakovsky) and the 1st Fighter Regiment (Commander Lt. Col. Ing.Stefan Paulicek) was established after dividing of the Czech-Slovak Federal Republic. ![]() In August 1993, Lt. Col. Ing. Igor Mihalus had been appointed as a commander of the airbase and the airbase was transformed to the 31st Airbase 31st Fighter Regiment and 31st Fighter Wing, which commander was appointed Lt. Col. Ing. Jozef Dobrotka.
![]() ![]() ![]() Lt. Col. Ing. Lubomir Lovas had been appointed as a commander of the AFB after retirement of Lt. Col. Ing. Igor Mihalus on the 1st of August 1999. The airbase had been renamed to "the 1st Airbase of Otto Smik"and today is under command of Col. Ing. Jozef Dobrotka. |
